[OS X TeX] TeXShop and external editor

For lo these many years now, I have used Alpha as my TeX editor, and have Alpha send files to TeXShop for typesetting and viewing.

The most recent release of TeXShop breaks this arrangement.  When Alpha sends the file to TeXShop for typesetting, TeXShop comes to the front, but seemingly nothing happens after that.   Except … if I drop the file on TeXShop together it open in TeXShop to typeset it, then go back to Alpha and send it for typesetting again, nothing appears to happen, but then … some time (30-60 seconds?) later, the preview window in TeXShop comes to the front, but nothing else happens (it does not typeset), and Alpha exhibits a lengthy beachball that does eventually resolve.

Anyhow, TeXShop 5.52 has broken a long and happy relationship. I hope this isn’t permanent.
