[OS X Emacs] compile-next-makefile: compilation errors with strange characters

Hello,
when compiling C++ code (compile-next-makefile) on MacOS Leopard
(English) in Aquamacs 1.3, compilation errors are reported
occasionally with a-circumflex characters instead of the single quote
characters, e.g.
loadniftiimage.cpp:286: error: âclass
Ui::VLoadNiftiImageClassâ has no member named
âm_cbxEndFrameâ
When compiling from the commandline, I get:
loadniftiimage.cpp:286: error: ‘class Ui::VLoadNiftiImageClass’ has
no member named ‘m_cbxEndFrame’
How can I get the same or similar output within Emacs?
Many thanks in advance,
Stefan
