[OS X Emacs] Option-is-meta indication

Is there something I can put into mode-line-format to show whether option is meta or option is a character modifier? I'm happy with ctrl-; to flip mode but would quite like to see it. (I suppose I could override it with a function which hacks the mode-line accordingly, but that's a bit untidy.)
