Absolutely.  In fact, this is what it does by default.

If this doesn't work, install the latest version and have a look at your configuration files and see if you're setting `ispell-program-name' or if you are making any other changes to the `ispell' configuration.  "Start Aquamacs without customizations" from the "Help/Diagnose and Report Bug" menu may help you.
