[OS X TeX] A proper place to install a newer package

What is the proper place to install the package from CTAN which
is newer than updated GW distribution?

Putting it in the normal TeX tree means that in the next update with
i-Installer it could be wiped out and replaced by an older package
from GW distribution.

Putting it in

/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local

or

~/Library/texmf

means that two versions of the same package coexist and I am not sure which will
be loaded. Any suggestions?
