Have you had a try at Penelope (aka open-source Eudora):

I'm not gonna try it myself (I stopped using Eudora at about the time  
I received Mac OS X Public Beta and migrated to Mail.app), but if  
Firefox handles Unicode properly then Thunderbird and hence Penelope  
should.
