[OS X TeX] Textures early history

OzTeX is (was?) freeware by Andrew Trevorrow, an Australian programmer. He ported the TeX software from Pascal to Modula 2 and compiled it on earlier models of the Mac. I met him at the 10th TUG meeting at Stanford in 1985, where he freely distributed his implementation on 3.5" floppy disks.

He also implemented Metafont and Metapost, and perhaps other TeX-related software. He still has a website, but his software may be too old for any current Mac OS version.

Introduction OzTeX is a freeware Mac implementation of Donald Knuth's TeX typesetting system. TeX is mainly used in the academic community for the production of theses, papers and books, or wherever high-quality output is desired.

Hello Max.

Are you aware of the software called OzTeX ? Software for TeX on the Mac, under Classic OS. (developed for OS versions even before that name was adopted)

It was developed by a guy living in Adelaide, South Australia.
Subsequently he moved to Melbourne, Victoria. This was in the 1980s. I can tell you a bit more about it, if you are interested.

Cheers,

  Ross

That gives quite a nice overview of the program. Thanks.

The FTL ads give a Toronto address, and Smith's implementation was only
named MacTeX for a few months, so this seems consistent with the (very
little) information that I've found.

Thanks for helping me solve this mystery.
